HBO Go on Consoles

Poster: Rich
Posted on August 5, 2011 at 11:33:10 AM
Like Netflix and Hulu, we can soon get HBO content streamed to consoles. The ability to stream every HBO show ever at anytime on a console sounds pretty awesome to me. If there's a billing option that circumvents by cable provider, I may be a new customer of theirs....

Quote

No time table has been announced, but we'd be surprised if the service didn't launch on consoles within a year or so. Although there are no price details at this time, given that the service is free to HBO subscribers on other platforms, we expect the same for consoles.

Redbox Expands Game Rentals

Poster: Rich
Posted on June 17, 2011 at 8:51:22 AM
Redbox has rolled out game rentals nationwide this month. Though it appears that none of them are near me. Which sucks, because there's a few games that I'd love to rent for a day or two, but sure as hell wouldn't buy....

Quote

As promised, Redbox has rolled out game rentals nationwide.

In April, Redbox said it would start offering game rentals in 21,000 of its 27,000 kiosks this month. The company is renting out a range of titles for the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3, including the recently launched Duke Nukem Forever and last year's blockbuster hit Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Redbox has launched a full online listing of games available to customers. Those who find something they like can reserve a title from home and pick it up at their chosen Redbox location.

Redbox is charging $2 per day for its game rentals. It currently rents DVDs and Blu-ray discs for as little as $1 per day and $1.50 per day, respectively.

June Game Informer Digital Issue Is Free Until May 30th

Poster: Rich
Posted on May 27, 2011 at 8:27:06 AM
Game Informer is allowing anyone to read the June issue in digital format for free until May 30th. It works pretty well with a little bit of lag. I hope they're going to make it available for download so it can be taken on the go without being reliant on an internet connection.

Quote

For over a year now, Game Informer has offered a digital subscription to the magazine that was simple in design. With the most recent June issue we went back to the drawing board and started building digital issues from the ground up, with some added digital bonuses.

From exclusive content to interactive pages, the new Game Informer Digital magazine is all about an easy reading experience as it is created to be native to your computer screen and take advantage of all the things a computer-based digital edition can offer. Like any project however, we managed to make the product before we had all the bells and whistles in place. So if you are interested in getting a Game Informer Digital subscription you will need to visit your local Gamestop until we can make digital subscriptions available online.

Nintendo Readies Wii Remote Plus?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 24, 2010 at 10:20:50 AM
It was bound to happen when they released the MotionPlus add-on for the Remote. People asked, "why not build this into the Remote?" Nyko even has a product that does just that. It is called the Wand+ and is a third-party add-on for the Wii. We hope to get one for review soon.

Quote

We played FlingSmash in February of this year and quite enjoyed it, as our First Impressions show, but its projected release date of Summer 2010 has been and gone without the game hitting shelves. Now retailer Gamestop has released boxart of the game showing the game is set to be bundled with a Remote, seemingly containing MotionPlus built-in.

Titled "Wii Remote Plus", the controller itself looks only slightly different, with a slight curve below the four lights the only alteration visible at this resolution. As FlingSmash requires MotionPlus this is obviously a new controller containing the add-on, but could the game's delay have been caused by the newly developed Remote?

Wiikey 1.9s Released

Poster: Aron Schatz

In what will likely be the last update to the Wiikey, version 1.9s was released. The download fixes the Smash Bros problem and adds some other nice things. It is too bad that it took so long to release an update.

Wiikey.cn Back Up

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 25, 2008 at 2:14:35 AM
The official Wiikey site has returned to life after months of being down. No one would mind if it was down, but the huge problem is that LEGIT copies of Smash Bros. Brawl do not work with the Wiikey. This was shown here: »http://www.aseforums.com/viewtopic.php?topicid=5637

Hopefully this means that an update is on the way and soon: http://www.wiikey.cn/

A Couple of things Dragging you back to 1997.

First things first, Wednesday the Internet exploded with news that only seems to come when there is legitimate news about Duke Nukem Forever.
So here is the purely non-informative yet somehow incredibly alluring trailer.
Remember: It is coming...Soon.

On a completely different note, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams came out Tuesday. While it sadly looked from the beginning like yet another half-assed romp for Sonic Team, it is apparently pretty good (though no where near as good as the first one), so make sure you give it a look if you have a Wii.

Wiikey.cn Site Down

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 20, 2007 at 4:01:45 PM
Well, I've been searching on the cause for the modchip's site being down and couldn't turn up anything useful. Their site has been down for the past week and is now showing the Apache default page.

Speculation is running high. Was it Nintendo that shut them down? Maybe it was a server failure? Who knows... All I want to know is when they are coming back.

Modchips are legal. They allow you to play import games. Whatever I want to do to my own hardware is my business... not the company that sold it to me.

Wii Zapper Rated 18+ in Britian.

Poster: Logan King
Posted on October 21, 2007 at 3:54:46 AM
In what can only be a hilarious joke, but is actually a testament to the moronic tendencies of British lawmakers, the PEGI has given the peripheral Wii Zapper an age rating. Why? Well, I guess it vaguely looks sort of like a gun, even though it is merely a base for the Wiimote.

Quote

Apparently, little plastic vaguely gun-shaped thingies are more dangerous than we thought. Over in the the U.K. the Wii Zapper has already received a PEGI-18 rating for when it is released next month. That seems kind of strange to do for a peripheral; even stranger when you consider that it comes bundled with Link’s Crossbow Training, which is mostly derived from a game that received a “T for Teen” rating in the U.S.

Linky.

I wonder when people realize the flaw in this when they see how little kids can walk into a toy store with a dollar and walk out with a toy ray gun that is infinitely more gun-looking that this is.

Nintendo: Japan's Second Most Profitable Company. Period.

Poster: Logan King
Posted on September 27, 2007 at 3:29:58 AM

Quote

Nintendo Co Ltd roared past Canon Inc to become Japan's second most valuable company behind Toyota Motor Corp, driven by its hot-selling Wii game console and DS handheld player.

Nintendo's Wii has so far outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 by a large margin since their launches late last year as Nintendo's strategy to expand the gaming population by offering easy-to-play but innovative games has proved a big success. Shares in Nintendo were up 2.6 percent at 58,900 yen in afternoon trade on Tuesday, bringing its market value to 8.34 trillion yen ($72.6 billion), surpassing Canon's market capitalization of 8.20 trillion yen.

Linky

All because of two hardware products. I'm sure everyone knew that Nintendo was now rolling in cash. But come on! For an industry where everyone else loses money on hardware sales, this is ridiculous, even if Nintendo has always sold hardware for profit.

Woman Dies In Wii Giveaway

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on January 15, 2007 at 8:41:18 PM
A woman died of water poisoning today as she drank loads of water without going to the bathroom. Water can kill in large doses. There you go.

Quote

Jennifer Strange was found dead on Friday at her home after taking part in a contest named "Hold your wee for a Wii" at the studios of radio station KDND 107.9. The competition involved drinking large quantities of water, with the last person to go to the toilet winning a Wii console - currently out of stock in most of North America.

Wii: Opera On Friday

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 20, 2006 at 3:23:16 PM
Opera will be Wiileased™ (Aron Schatz, That's a word!) on Friday. Hopefully the Wii will bring some good online gaming with it as well.

Quote

When Wii users download Opera, it will activate the "Internet Channel" on the Wii and allow them to use the game console to browse the Internet on their television. Opera via a comic strip, and Nintendo via a statement, announced that the final version of Opera for Wii will be available in March 2007. That final version, according to Nintendo, will also be free March through June, after which it will cost 500 Wii points (roughly $5) through the Wii Shop Channel. In addition to its PC and OS version, Opera is already available for portable devices via Opera Mobile for smart phones and Opera Mini for cell phones.

Big Reggie hands out first Wii. No faces imploded thus far.

Poster: Logan King
Posted on November 20, 2006 at 1:26:34 AM
The Nintendo Wii launched among high fanfare after the insanely violent PS3 launch. Its amazing what having a number of consoles somewhat resembling the number needed does.

Quote

NEW YORK--Isaiah "Triforce" Johnson's eyes were feeling heavy, but even after getting little to no sleep over the past few days, the man could not help but smile very early on Sunday morning.
Johnson was sold the first Nintendo Wii at the Toys "R" Us in Times Square after waiting several days outside the retail giant's flagship store. And it wasn't just any normal store employee who rang the register; Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, did the honors of handing out the first system.

Rock on Nintendo. I'll have a Wii by the end of the year, that's for sure.

Wii Browser to Be Free Until July 2007

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 27, 2006 at 2:09:57 PM
Nintendo and Opera will be releasing the Wii Browser for free until 2007. After that date it will cost you some dough. This is to help sales of their system at launch.

Quote

Opera Software, the makers of the Wii's Web-surfing software, cleared that situation up a bit today with news that its browser for the system would be free for a limited time. Gamers will be able to download the Opera browser from the Wii Shop Channel free of charge until June 2007, the company announced today. After June 2007, the browser will be available to download for an undetermined number of Wii points, the virtual currency of the Wii Shop Channel. The browser will support Flash and AJAX-based content, and while it will be customized for Nintendo's next-gen system, Opera promises it will have "the same complete standards support as the Opera 9 Desktop browser," with functions including bookmarks and zoom. The browser will also be designed to work specifically with the motion-sensing Wii controllers.

Nintedo Wii Release Soon

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 8, 2006 at 4:29:43 PM
IBM has been shipping Nintendo the CPUs for use in the Wii. Release is very soon! I can't wait, I'll be picking one up.

Quote

IBM has announced that the first 'Broadway' CPUs created for the Nintendo Wii are being shipped from the company's East Fishkill, N.Y., fabrication facility to Nintendo, as the company ramps up for the launch of the next-gen console later this year. Under the terms of the agreement, IBM will produce millions of fully tested, Power Architecture-based chips featuring IBM Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology at 90 nanometers (90 billionths of a meter), based on the specifications of the custom design agreement previously agreed upon by the two companies.
