Mexican Drug Cartels Selling Counterfeit Windows For Profit

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on February 4, 2011 at 12:10:01 PM
The article basically says that cartels are selling the BS software to fund other activities... but what it says to me is that the cartel is pretty much raking in cash over Microsoft's hard work. Don't get me wrong, I don't like Microsoft, but this is a double strike. The cartels basically counterfeit Windows and sell it for cheap to fund their drug activities. This probably means that a large chunk of their money comes from this. $800 million per year!

Quote

Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software maker, showed a fake copy of its Office 2007 software found for sale on the streets of Mexico and “brazenly” stamped with the rectangular “FMM” logo of the Familia drug cartel to demonstrate the link between counterfeiting and organized crime.

“This is the real side, the scary side of counterfeiting and it plagues the world,” David Finn, Microsoft’s associate general counsel for antipiracy, said today at the Global Congress on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy in Paris.]

Not everyone is a freedom fighter when providing software for cheap. In this case, counterfeiting is truly funding terrible crimes.

Gawker Media Has Been Compromised

Poster: computer_freak_8
Posted on December 13, 2010 at 9:59:46 PM
It's all around the Internet, but I just found out. Some of the highlights that I found interesting are that the hackers (yes, they are of the malicious variety) apparently managed to compromise the entire thing: they downloaded all of Gawker's source code, found out they were running a Linux kernel that's over a year old, and have posted a database that supposedly includes the account information of anyone that has ever posted a comment to a Gawker Media website.

Oh, but it get a little bit worse - plenty of the Gawker Media staff use weak passwords, use the same password for many different accounts, and haven't encrypted the password database of its users - quite ironic, considering Lifehacker's wealth of password security and encryption tutorials.

The easiest way to find out more, at this point, it probably just to run a Google search for: gawker media hacked.

Alert!!! Security hole found in PayPal's iPhone application

Poster: Daniel Doty
Posted on November 5, 2010 at 8:03:31 AM
Summery:

Quote

A security research firm has discovered several security problems with PayPal’s iPhone app, warning that hackers can use man-in-the-middle attacks to steal sensitive user data.

Even though it has been reported fixed by PayPal, I am not so sure I would continue using the PayPal application on the iPhone. People may want to wait this one out, and make sure that it is okay to use.

Here is a blurb from the article:

Quote

According to an audit of the app by Chicago-based viaForensics, the vulnerability stems from the app’s failure to confirm the authenticity of PayPal’s website when communicating over the Internet.

Without that confirmation, a hacker could electronically step between a user and PayPal, pretend to be the PayPal website and gather usernames and passwords. The hacker would need to be in the same physical location as the user or have gained access to the same Wi-Fi network.

In practice, that could mean setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot in a location, such as a train station, and waiting for someone to use the network for a PayPal transaction on their iPhone app. It would be a fishing expedition, but the equipment and software needed is commonly available.

To read more, and find out more on this security issue, jump over to ZDNet and read the rest of the article.

Missile Command Returns

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on February 25, 2010 at 1:22:30 PM
Atari is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Missile Command by giving it a free version for play on the internet. The new version has been updated and reimagined by OMGPOP, operator of the omgpop.com website. Housed in a mini-site dedicated to the game, the remixed Missile Command captures the original iconic DNA of the 1980's phenomenon, and adds compelling new dimensions and attitude - highlighted by the entirely online multiplayer gameplay, a first for the franchise. Missile Command is free to play and available at http://www.missilecommand.com, http://www.atari.com/missilecommand and http://www.omgpop.com/games/missilecommand.

The year was 1980 and all across the planet people had the very real fear that one day the world's super powers would finally use their nuclear arsenals. Missile Command was in many ways a reaction to those fears. The premise of the game was simple: the player must protect six cities from an ever increasing swarm of ballistic missiles. Control was taken care of by a fast and accurate trackball that was notorious for pinching the skin of players' fingers. That didn't seem to affect the public appeal of the game which became an immediate arcade smash hit and one of the biggest sellers of the Atari 2600 system.

Now Atari and OMGPOP have built upon that legacy with this exciting online version. With enhanced features such as power-ups, new enemies, upgrades, and an entirely online multiplayer co-operative gameplay option, the new Missile Command has all the makings of a modern classic.

"Missile Command is a pop culture phenomenon that millions upon millions of fans have enjoyed throughout the years," says Jim Wilson, President and CEO of Atari, Inc. "The new Missile Command maintains the appeal of the original while bringing it to today's casual and social game players. It is an example of how Atari's games portfolio is well positioned for today's growing online games market."

"Working with Atari was terrific," says OMGPOP CEO Dan Porter. "To be able to work on a classic that many of us grew up playing and add the social and multiplayer features was a great way to bring the game to the millions of teens on omgpop.com."

Do you remember when Missile Command came out? Get some nostalgic gameplay by checking out those websites. It is pretty fun and still the same pick up and play gameplay.

NY Man Pleads Guilty To Selling Copyrighted Goods

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on February 25, 2010 at 11:53:45 AM
A New York man pleaded guilty to criminal copyright infringement for selling counterfeit goods over the internet. The man, Robert Cimino, 59, of Syracuse, NY, was charged with selling more than $250,000 worth of counterfeit goods over the internet. According to court documents, buyers would contact Cimino by email and then pay for the goods using Paypal.

Cimino would then mail infringing copies of Adobe, Autodesk, Intuit and Quark programs that he had burned to CD or DVD to the customers, including customers in the Eastern District of Virginia. Cimino admitted that from February 2006 to September 2009, he received at least $270,035 from his sales of infringing software products.

Don't get us wrong, we strongly support lowering copyright terms and a basic reform of the copyright system to strip out software from the mix. He was a criminal selling counterfeit goods. The people that purchased the software were mislead into believing that the software was legitimate.

Cimino is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Anthony J. Trenga on May 28, 2010. Cimino faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, restitution and forfeiture.

Panasonic Falls Down Microsoft exFAT Hole

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on February 25, 2010 at 11:42:10 AM
Panasonic is the latest company to bow to Microsoft's exFAT filesystem for use in its products. exFAT (or FAT64) does bring a few evolutionary things to the FAT filesystem. The partition limitation is now 64ZB (64x2^70 bytes) and file size has been increased to the same limit. Older FAT32 partitions are limited to 4GB per file which is really unacceptable in today's computing world.

The problem with exFAT is that it is patent encumbered so any use of it requires a license to Microsoft. This should stifle industry adoption of the filesystem, but Microsoft is keen on pushing its technology into the market to lock out competing standards (like the patent free EXT4 filesystem or others). Microsoft has long learned to get its technology at the heart of products to force the market to adopt only its technology. exFAT is available on Windows, of course. Mac and Linux, not so much.

The new SDXC format for SecureDigital cards will be standardized on the exFAT filesystem. We have no doubt that open source support will move out of the experimental area soon enough, but standards should be open and not be patent encumbered.

In addition to licensing the exFAT filesystem, Panasonic also received a license for long file name support for FAT32. The full press release is on the next page.Next Page »

Happy USA Independence Day everyone! Remember that today isn't all about grilling and hot dogs. Today was when this country was born and founded.

Our ideals seem to be wanning as the government moves us more towards a socialistic nanny state. People, the power of the government is in YOUR hands. Don't let greedy and power hungry politicians control your life. We need to stop spending money we don't have on pork projects and bailouts.

Western Digital Enters SSD Market

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 30, 2009 at 8:48:02 AM
This PR was sent by WDC this morning. ASE Labs has asked WDC numerous times about its plans about SSDs since magnetic storage seems to be finally wanning. This is probably the first of many moves for the company.

Quote

LAKE FOREST, Calif., March 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC), a world leader in hard drive storage for computing and consumer electronics applications, today announced that it has completed a $65 million cash acquisition of SiliconSystems, Inc., Aliso Viejo, Calif., a leading supplier of solid-state drives for the embedded systems market.

Since its inception in 2002, SiliconSystems has sold millions of SiliconDrive products to meet the high performance, high reliability and multi-year product lifecycle demands of the network-communications, industrial, embedded-computing, medical, military and aerospace markets. These markets accounted for approximately one third of worldwide solid-state drive revenues in 2008. SiliconSystems’ product portfolio includes solid-state drives with SATA, EIDE, PC Card, USB and CF interfaces in 2.5-inch, 1.8-inch, CF and other form factors. SiliconSystems has developed extensive intellectual property to address the stringent embedded systems market requirements to ensure data integrity, eliminate unscheduled downtime, protect application data and software and provide for data security and protection through its patented and patent-pending PowerArmor, SiSMART, SolidStor and SiSecure technologies.

WD’s storage industry leadership, worldwide infrastructure, and technical and financial resources will enable further growth in SiliconSystems’ existing markets and customer relationships. SiliconSystems’ intellectual property and technical expertise will provide additional building blocks for future products to address emerging opportunities in WD’s existing markets.

“We are delighted to have the SiliconSystems team join WD,” said John Coyne, president and CEO of WD. “The combination will be modestly accretive to revenue and margins as a result of SiliconSystems’ existing position as a trusted supplier to the well-established $400 million market for embedded solid-state drives. SiliconSystems’ intellectual property and technical expertise will significantly accelerate WD’s solid-state drive development programs for the netbook, client and enterprise markets, providing greater choice for our customers to satisfy all their storage requirements.”

Integration into WD begins immediately, with SiliconSystems now becoming known as the WD Solid-State Storage business unit, complementing WD’s existing Branded Products, Client Storage, Consumer Storage and Enterprise Storage business units.

SuperTalent Shipping UltraDrive SSDs

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 26, 2009 at 9:47:39 AM

Quote

In March 2009 SuperTalent introduced its UltraDrive series to market. This whitepaper outlines some of the performance testing done by SuperTalent showing the outstanding performance of the UltraDrive series. Both UltraDrive series achieved Sequential Read and Write speeds as high as 250MB/sec on the ATTO benchmark. With IOMETER the UltraDrive ME measured over 10,000 Sequential Read IOPS and nearly 16000 Sequential Write IOPS and 6500 Random Read IOPS and around 4000 Random Write IOPS. The UltraDrive LE series (SLC Flash) results were even better for Sequential Write, and Random Read and Write, yielding over 13,000 Sequential Read IOPS and nearly 7500 Random Read IOPS and 5000-6000 Random Write IOPS. Compared to a standard 7200RPM HDD from Seagate the 128GB UltraDrive ME lowered boot time by nearly 70 percent; booting the system in just over 9 seconds vs. nearly 30 seconds. Although the UltraDrives are available in densities ranging from 32GB to 256GB this whitepaper will focus on the performance of the 54-256GB Density Products.

Nintendo to allow you to buy games you probably already own.

It finally looks like we have unofficial confirmation of the DSi's virtual console.

Check out Kombo for the whole story, but the highlight--as I'm sure we can all agree, is the revelation that the DSi will allow you to download Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games.

Linky.

Since the DSi is functionally limited, all this will ever have is Game Gear and Gameboy games (I'm doubting NGPC emulation would be in the cards), plus the obvious "ha ha screw you DSi owner" GBA titles. That's fantastic. Usually worse versions of Master System games, and an admittedly large quantity of quality original Gameboy games that nonetheless have the graphics of calculator apps most of the time, no doubt to be sold as straight roms with no optimization whatsoever. Really, sign me up.

Have I mentioned how much I want the DSi to bomb? Maybe that will be Nintendo's wake up call to stop acting like Apple does.

PR: SPARKLE Announces Diamonds Sputtering Technology For Video Cards

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on February 16, 2009 at 11:21:54 AM

Quote

Now with more and more advanced relative technologies, the performance of video cards is getting stronger and stronger, there will be more heat generated by video cards, which significantly impairs the life expectancy of GPU and video memory chips on video cards. Video card companies have a lot of programs come and go to solve the problem of heat dissipation. The most commonly seen in general is the use of fans with cooling fins to do additional cooling. in the early days, the cooling job can be done simply with a fan or cooling fins, but in today's graphics cards with more intense heat than before, the cooling job must be done on the technologies not the same as before, not just rely on the fan and cooling fins. Video card companies must go to find some relatively new method to solve the problem of heat dissipation.
