Quad-core Heading To Your Phones/Tablets

Nividia's Tegra platform will reach a new level in mobile computing this year. They expect to release a quad-core Tegra system for tablets in August and the end of the year for mobile phones. They also say that it is just as fast as a Core 2 Duo, but ARM CPUs are well suited for pure number crunching. Benchmarks don't tell the entire story. I'm sure it is plenty fast, though. The code name is Kal-El. I wonder if Intel or AMD will announce a kryptonite CPU to counter this?

So it turns out that NVIDIA roadmap we saw last month was as true and pure as driven snow. The barely conceivable quad-core Tegra chip that it listed has now been made official by none other than NVIDIA itself, with the company also informing us that the new silicon is already sampling out to prospective clients. Known as Kal-El internally, this will most likely turn into NVIDIA's Tegra 3 as and when it's ready to enter the consumer market. Tonight NVIDIA whetted our appetite for what's to come with a demo that can most fittingly be described as an exhibition of unadulterated computational muscle. A 2560 x 1440 stream was being decoded on a developmental device, scaled down to that slate's native 1366 x 768 resolution, and additionally displayed on a connected 30-inch, 2560 x 1600 monitor. That entire voluminous workload was being handled in real time by Kal-El and we saw no signs of it struggling.

If you look at the graphic on Engadget's site, the code names for the Tegra line are superheros.

Nvidia Cuts GTX Pricing

Whoever says that competition isn't good is Microsoft. Nvidia has cut their high end graphics card pricing in response to the new ATI graphics cards. AMD's ATI is doing extremely well this round. Their scale up approach seems to be paying off.

Quote

Nvidia said Sunday night that the GeForce GTX 280 is now available for $499 and the GTX 260 for $299. The high-end GTX 280 was originally $649, while the 260 was priced previously at $399. Both products were rolled out less than a month ago. Nvidia's graphics boards are now more in line with ATI's newest offerings. At $299, the GTX 260 price now matches that of ATI's comparable HD 4870.

Once again, this is a good reason why the ultra top of the line should never be bought initially. You should get a card that is one below. The 4850 is an amazing card for the price. I'll have a 4870 soon for testing.

Linux Foundation Complains About Nvidia Drivers

Poster: Aron Schatz

The Linux Foundation is going on a rant and complaining about Nvidia's binary only drivers. Nvidia is the only large graphics company to not attempt to open up their specifications on the hardware. Intel, VIA, and even AMD have opened up their hardware. Linux is the future and if Nvidia continues this trend, AMD is in a good position to clean up. I have in my hands a Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 that works well in Linux and was just released.

"We...consider any closed-source Linux kernel module or driver to be harmful and undesirable," the official statement begins. "Vendors that provide closed-source kernel modules force their customers to give up key Linux advantages or choose new vendors." But Bottomley gets much more specific than this. "Their (Nvidia's) binary module is one of the top causes of kernel crashes, which makes Linux look bad," he said. "Nvidia does a reasonable job of Q-and-A-ing (quality assurance) of a certain number of configurations but the problem is that their configurations (are) a lot less than what's actually out there on the market," Bottomley said.

That being said, AMD's fully open source driver team at Novell still as a ways to go before being on par with the FireGL binary driver. Even so, AMD is providing more and more feature with FireGL including Crossfire support (finally!).

NVIDIA Aquires AGEIA

It is official. NVIDIA is buying the PhysX maker. Full PR here. This may spell trouble for AMD considering that all major physics engines have been bought (Intel owns Havok). What the industry needs to do is make some open standards. They've got OpenGL for graphics. It sounds like it is time for OpenPL.

NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA), the world leader in visual computing technologies and the inventor of the GPU, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire AGEIA Technologies, Inc., the industry leader in gaming physics technology. AGEIA's PhysX software is widely adopted with more than 140 PhysX-based games shipping or in development on Sony Playstation3, Microsoft XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii and Gaming PCs. AGEIA physics software is pervasive with over 10,000 registered and active users of the PhysX SDK.

You didn't know that AGEIA survives by supplying the physics engines of all three current consoles?
