Unlocked Cell Phone For Sale?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on January 24, 2007 at 2:11:31 PM
If you actually want to purchase a real cell phone, you may be able to. Carriers such as Verizon have a habit of destroying the original features of a phone so you can pay for things that should be included.

Quote

Walk into any supermarket in the U.S. and it's easy to see that Americans have more choices in terms of products they can buy than most people in the world. But when it comes to choosing a cell phone, consumers in the U.S. are limited to a handful of devices offered by a few manufacturers, and those devices are sold solely through a single service provider. This means that Verizon Wireless subscribers are limited to phones sold specifically for the Verizon network. And Cingular Wireless subscribers are limited to handsets that Cingular sells. It also means that when subscribers switch from one service provider to another, they are unable to take their phones with them.

Cell Phones Don't Cause Cancer

Yet another study has shown that cell phones do not cause cancer. I believe we should just assume that anything we do in the world causes health problems and move on. I can't eat this, live to close to that, wear this thing...

Quote

A huge study from Denmark offers the latest reassurance that cell phones don't trigger cancer. Scientists tracked 420,000 Danish cell phone users, including 52,000 who had gabbed on the gadgets for 10 years or more, and some who started using them 21 years ago. They matched phone records to the famed Danish Cancer Registry that records every citizen who gets the disease and reported Tuesday that cell-phone callers are no more likely than anyone else to suffer a range of cancer types. The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, is the largest yet to find no bad news about the safety of cell phones and the radiofrequency energy they emit.

Text Message Spam

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 15, 2006 at 2:17:58 PM
The crazy people that continue to use text messaging for all communications run the risk of getting bombarded by spam. I am ready to stop all text service on my cell phone. I'd rather have a conversation that read a text message. Are we that anti-social?

Quote

The 40-year-old sales executive from Los Angeles said he uses text messaging sporadically to contact friends, so he was extremely annoyed when he started getting text messages offering him a deal to buy or rent a time-share from Webuyresorts.com. Even though the unwanted messages were costing Paul 10 cents a pop, he said he wasn't as annoyed about the cost, because he had only received a few of these messages. Instead, he was concerned that his cell phone would soon be hijacked by marketers, including his own cell phone provider, contacting him with unwanted advertisements.

IBM Announces First Computer-Based Cell Processor

Poster: Logan King
Posted on September 14, 2006 at 4:00:15 PM
Hot on the heels of the Intel Core Cuo 2, IBM has finally announced a non-console version of the "Cell" processor used in the PS3. I personally want to see how the Cell will do in normal computers.

Quote

It's being marketed as a device for "compute-intensive" operations, which confirms expectations that Cell would be introduced on the high end, and touted for its number-crunching ability. Each QS20 blade will feature a pair of Cells, each of which is what the STI coalition -- Sony, Toshiba, and IBM -- describes as a "multi-element" processor, rather than "multicore."

Verizon Makes Fuel Cells a Reality

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on August 7, 2006 at 12:15:03 PM
Verizon has been using natural gas powered fuel cells for a bit in NY. The article does not mention how they split the hydrogen from the hydrocarbon molecule and if it is efficient. It doesn't make sense to split the hydrogen from the gas and then use the hydrogen as the fuel source. You have to do double the work.

Quote

Verizon's fuel cells use natural gas piped in from a local gas company to obtain the hydrogen atoms for the chemical process. The natural gas is not burned. Instead, the hydrogen atoms are detached from the gas as it is fed into each of the seven cells, and then combined with oxygen atoms from the air to generate direct current electrical power. Heat and water are then vented from each cell, and direct current is converted to alternating current electricity for use in the building.

Bush Vetoes Stem Cell Bill

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 19, 2006 at 8:50:15 PM
In another blow to serious life saving research, Bush has vetoed a bill that would allow the federal government to release some tight restrictions on funding. Bush says that he is "Pro Life" but I guess that means that someone currently living isn't good enough to try to prolong their life.

Quote

The Senate bill's principal sponsor, Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pennsylvania, who recently survived a brush with cancer, was joined by Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tennessee, a physician who argued that Bush's policy is too restrictive. "I am pro-life, but I disagree with the president's decision to veto the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act," Frist said in a statement. "Given the potential of this research and the limitations of the existing lines eligible for federally funded research, I think additional lines should be made available."
