Egyptian Names Daughter "Facebook"

In a tale of epic fails, one person in Egypt just assigned his daughter to a life of ridicule and a host of facepalming. The fail is strong with this one. In all honesty, I understand the help that social networking gave the people in Egypt, but this is nuts.

Quote

According to Al-Ahram (one of the most popular newspapers in Egypt) a twenty-something Egyptian man has named his first born daughter “Facebook” in tribute to the role the social media service played in organizing the protests in Tahrir Square and beyond.

Helmed by now-famous Googler Wael Ghonim, the “We Are Khaled Said” Facebook page showed up within 5 days of Said’s death in June and served as a hub for dissidence against Egyptian police brutality as well as a way to disseminate logistical information about the escalating anti-government protests until Mubarak’s resignation. Other activist pages like one actually called “Tahrir Square” cropped up shortly afterward.

Companies: Don't Invest In Social Networking Yet

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 17, 2007 at 4:11:22 PM
Financial companies are warning people not to rush into social networking technologies. This is the latest fad on the internet. Companies are looking to cash in, but may be making a mistake in the long run.

Quote

With Facebook saying it will license its developer platform to other organizations, it also could become even easier for companies to develop their own social networks. But the Gartner report says the hype around social networking doesn't necessarily mean it's a mature enough technology to make it a critical business requirement. There is also little evidence that social networking will be as beneficial for businesses as other Web-based communications technology, such as instant messaging.

DeLorean May Make A Comeback!

The car from Back to the Future may make a comeback. I want this car.

Quote

Of the 9,000 built in 1981 and 1982, about 6,500 are still on the road, according to James Espey, vice president of DeLorean Motor. Enthusiasts gather at clubs from Cleveland to Norway. An event next week at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park is expected to attract more than a hundred DeLoreans. "People of all ages are interested in this car," says Espey, a San Diego native. "Kids who can't tell you what a Camaro is come through here on tours because they've seen 'Back to the Future.' "From the start, the DeLorean seemed destined for cult status. Its gull-wing doors and rakish lines stood out in an auto market that was still living down the AMC Pacer. And the stainless steel exterior looked like it belonged on a jet fighter.

Online Dating is Disappointing?

Poster: Rich
Posted on February 15, 2007 at 1:27:47 PM
Surprise! Someone had to waste a lot of time and money to find out that most people are disappointed with online dating. No sh*t! The problem is that some people take this crap too seriously. Don't get me wrong, there are some people who find meaningful relationships this way. But, initially, no one should expect to create a strong relationship with someone they've never met. Sometimes it works; Sometimes it doesn't. I see no need to over-analyze relationships. Especially the online type....

Quote

"A new study of romantic relationships finds that as online daters got to know another person over time, their initially sweet notions turned sour. The researchers suggest that inflated expectations can lead to major disappointments when daters meet in person. Once a flaw is spotted, the whole date is tainted."
