Egyptian Names Daughter "Facebook"

In a tale of epic fails, one person in Egypt just assigned his daughter to a life of ridicule and a host of facepalming. The fail is strong with this one. In all honesty, I understand the help that social networking gave the people in Egypt, but this is nuts.

Quote

According to Al-Ahram (one of the most popular newspapers in Egypt) a twenty-something Egyptian man has named his first born daughter “Facebook” in tribute to the role the social media service played in organizing the protests in Tahrir Square and beyond.

Helmed by now-famous Googler Wael Ghonim, the “We Are Khaled Said” Facebook page showed up within 5 days of Said’s death in June and served as a hub for dissidence against Egyptian police brutality as well as a way to disseminate logistical information about the escalating anti-government protests until Mubarak’s resignation. Other activist pages like one actually called “Tahrir Square” cropped up shortly afterward.

Facebook Breakup Notifier: Stalking Made Easy

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on February 22, 2011 at 11:12:51 AM
Do you like someone on Facebook? I mean, like like, not just like... You know, stalker like. You don't have to worry anymore about constantly checking the target's profile. You can now be informed when the target is single again and pounce.

Quote

When it comes to love, timing is everything. The same holds for sex, too. So the Breakup Notifier's eagle eyes and instant digits could help you ensnare the love of your life. Or at least your week.

Yes, it does feel a little like stalking. But in a good way. You don't want to miss your chance. Surely, all is fair in love and war. And, when it comes to love, it's always a war.

According to the New York Daily News, Loewenhertz created the app after he eavesdropped on a chat between his fiancee and her mother.

This is not always a wise thing to do. However, in this case, it was his fiancee's sister who needed a date, and, like fine members of the family, mother and sister wondered who might be available to fill that void.

Loewenhertz asked, jokingly of course, whether she'd like to know when he might become available. And one of the world's great ideas was born.

At the moment, the app is free. But it surely won't be for long. With love, you always have to pay.

I really think we're screwed as a society when stuff like this happens. Well, maybe not just this.

Facebook Starting To Use Your Content In Ads

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on January 26, 2011 at 12:49:56 PM
Remember that all the content you post to Facebook can be used by them? You did know this, right? It seems that Facebook will start using content posted by its members (meaning you) in advertisements. You don't get any money out of the deal, though.

Quote

Facebook said that if a person currently checks in at a respective company's store or "likes" a brand page, the action often gets lost amid all the other content that a user's friends may see. Sponsored Stories solves that problem for advertisers by plucking valuable content from user news feeds and making it more readily noticeable to others.

The Sponsored Stories, which kicked off yesterday for Facebook's "premium" advertisers, will be labeled and viewable only to the content creator's friends, Facebook noted. The service will respect a person's privacy settings. However, Facebook users won't be able to opt out of the service. That's somewhat surprising, since Facebook users can modify their inclusion in the company's existing Social Ads by letting their social actions be includedin a marketer's ad on the site and be shown to friends--or opt out.

Stuff like this should always be opt-in.

Facebook Worth $50 Billion?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on January 3, 2011 at 10:40:03 AM
And all of that value comes from YOU. That's right, you. Every piece of data you put on Facebook makes their value that much more. They can mine the data for trends and such to sell to advertisers and more.

Quote

Facebook has raised 500 million euros from US investment bank Goldman Sachs and a Russian investor that values the popular social networking site at 50 billion dollars, the New York Times reported on Monday.

The investment puts the value of Facebook at higher than fellow Internet companies eBay and Yahoo!, as well as media company Time Warner, the newspaper said citing sources familiar with the deal.

The funds will give Facebook added resources to develop new resources, make acquisitions and lure away top employees as it increasingly competes more directly with Internet search giant Google.
