Meh, I am not really impressed... This drive for higher technology is tiring, my 75 Hz LCD displays just fine, so I see no need to upgrade...

What I DO want to see is higher resolutions on LCD monitors. Mine is a 300 panel and it only goes to 1280 x 1024, which is not enough for me...

Its not who a person is in the inside, but what he does that defines him.

A lot more than the 75 my main monitor has, but then again there is nothing wrong with that speed as it is.

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

75Hz is fine for CRTs since they are different when painting the screen. Remember that ghosting isn't done on a CRT, the faster you can refresh a LCD the better to prevent this kind of crap.

But this new tech really isn't increasing the refresh rate (redrawing the same screen) its adding aditional new different screens to fill in the gaps. So I don't understand why they are calling it a higher refresh rate when it really isn't.

Hey Aron, I think I'm gonna disagree with you ... or maybe even I won't ...
Based on my knowledge as well as my personal experiences:...

The reason we need a fast refresh rate for CRT's is because the pixels are drawn by momentary phosphorescence of a subpixel - this fades with time, but the monitor is redrawing the screen over and over supposedly fast enough that it redraws each pixel before it has time to fade. On my 19" CRT which I had previously - 60Hz redraw would show a subtle flicker, but I could perceive it and it melted my eyes when on the internet or working with documents ... it did NOT matter for 3D gaming or watching video, because the image was changing so much I didn't have time to notice screen flicker. But I would like to say that 75Hz was NOT enough for me when working with docutments! I used to run my monitor at 1280x1024 @ 85Hz *minimum* (actually I think that was the highest refresh for my monitor at that resolution). I agree that 120Hz is rocksolid beautiful ... for a static image.

However, on an LCD monitor, once a pixel (or subpixel) is switched on to a certain colour, it will keep displaying that colour without fading or flickering, until it's commanded to modify its behaviour. So there's NO FLICKER with static documents or photos whether you run at 60Hz or even lower. However however (!) - and this is the bit where I suddenly realise I might agree with Aron after all - ghosting upon image *motion* is the issue with LCD's. I actually, find *absolutely no problem* with ghosting at 60Hz ... in fact, for a time, I switched on "Mouse Trails" in Windows, because I kept losing my mouse pointer on my 24" LCD and waving it around with mouse trails was supposed to make it easier to find (I switched it off again, because it's still annoying)

I haven't really checked out many LCD dedicated TV's, but I can see, upon reflection, that a higher refresh rate can be useful ... IF the latency of the screen is also low (they're two separate issues). Low latency monitors have been around for a while, so I guess if the refresh rate can be tightened now, it'd make for a better image.

But, to do another backflip - I'm really suspicious at the "frame interpolation" technology that's mentioned. We all know and love the 24fps film look and know how tacky it looks when frame interpolation makes it look like videotape ... unless it's done really well. But even if done really well, I'm wondering if this isn't really a marketing gimmick.

Especially as I believe contrast ratio improvement is a much more fundamental and immediate goal that LCD makers should be focusing on, rather than upping the refresh rate.

There you go, so Aron, do you think I agreed or disagreed with you? I'm honestly not sure anymore.

I'll answer your question with "yes."

The point is that LCDs will produce a ghost image because the pixels on the LCD do not fade as they do with CRTs. Besides flickering, when have you ever seen ghosting on a CRT? I have never seen it. On the other hand, I have seen ghosting on LCDs, even on some high-end models with very low refresh rates.

Faster responce times for LCD's, that's where you get away from ghosting..........Wink

! had a 19" 12ms LCD for a time and it displayed a bit of ghosting on some games, but my new Samsung has a 6ms responce time and I've got no complaints.............Wink
