Sun Rejects IBM Takeover, Shares Tank

Sun is really heading to the bottom of the bin. Just one day after rejecting IBM's buyout offer, the stock is trading near $5. Sun was at $250 not too long ago. Unlike Yahoo, though, Sun has been losing money every quarter. Really, Sun needs to do something.

Quote

Potential backlash from failed Sun-IBM negotiations could include a distraction by Sun's management and board in justifying their decision to reject an offer with a high premium, rather than focus on their struggling business, Sacconaghi noted.

The IBM-Sun buyout talks durig the last two week of March, the end of Sun's quarter, could make its fiscal third quarter challenging, given that up to 40 percent of Sun's revenue is generated in the last two weeks of a quarter, Sacconaghi stated in his report, noting customers are likely to have lingering concerns about Sun's future.

It is also not known if the deal would have been allowed to go through. IBM+Sun would be a monopoly in a few markets. Not that it seems to matter in this country...

Solar Tsunami Captured

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 3, 2008 at 2:03:31 PM
The NASA STEREO mission has video footage of a tsunami on the Sun. The video is very impressive. The Sun is a collection of particles as any matter is and this is an example of a wave going through.

Quote

With Soho, the researchers were only able to take images in the upper section of the corona - the outer part of the Sun’s atmosphere. Stereo's Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUVI) instruments monitor the Sun at four wavelengths, which allowed astronomers to see how the wave moved through the different layers of the solar atmosphere. "We were able to show for the first time that this wave actually propagates almost all the way from the surface of the Sun to high up in the Sun's atmosphere," said Dr Gallagher.

Sun Buys MySQL AB

Sun has purchased the company that head develops MySQL. Sun has been really pushing open source lately. I just hope that MySQL will continue to flourish under Sun. If not, PostgreSQL is a good alternative.

Quote

"Today's acquisition reaffirms Sun's position at the center of the global Web economy. Supporting our overall growth plan, acquiring MySQL amplifies our investments in the technologies demanded by those driving extreme growth and efficiency, from Internet media titans to the world's largest traditional enterprises," said Jonathan Schwartz, CEO and president, Sun Microsystems. "MySQL's employees and culture, along with its near ubiquity across the Web, make it an ideal fit with Sun's open approach to network innovation. And most importantly, this announcement boosts our investments into the communities at the heart of innovation on the Internet and of enterprises that rely on technology as a competitive weapon."

Seeing is believing... we'll see how Sun handles MySQL.

More Than Global Warming

Remember that the Earth revolves around the Sun. The Sun is a huge fusion reactor that spikes at points. These flairs can manifest their waves on the Earth with strange happenings.

Quote

Churning motions inside the Sun produce various kinds of waves, including sound waves called p-modes and another type of wave called g-modes. G-modes arise when pockets of material rising up from deep within the Sun get pulled downwards again by gravity, leading to a wave motion similar to the rise and fall of waves on the surface of the ocean. Both types of waves vibrate very slowly. The p-modes vibrate with periods of a few minutes, while the periods of g-modes are even longer, lasting tens of minutes or even several hours.

Intel And Sun Play Together

Poster: Aron Schatz

The CEOs from both companies are new supporting each other. Previously, Sun had been AMD only. Intel is making strides into markets they lost due to the agile AMD.

Quote

Schwartz has been instrumental in transforming Sun into a more neutral company. In 2004, when he was promoted to chief operating officer and McNealy's No. 2 man, Sun buried the antitrust suit hatchet with Microsoft. He was willing to work with Linux, too. He even floated the idea of running Solaris on Intel Itanium and IBM Power processors--the latter idea now a reality by virtue of OpenSolaris' portability. And most relevant to Monday's news, he was an advocate of x86 servers, not just Sun selling its own, but also Sun offering Solaris as a free download that could be installed on machines from IBM, HP and Dell.

GPL For Solaris?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 14, 2006 at 9:24:19 PM
First Sun will GPL Java, and now Solaris? It is pretty insane that Sun is going all the way to GPL to the code rather than sticking with something a bit more unrestrictive (in terms of derivative works also being under the GPL).

Quote

"Will you GPL Solaris, Mr. Green?" Sun Chief Executive Jonathan Schwartz asked Green. "We will take a very close look at it," Green said. "The familiarity and comfort level with the license we've chosen for Java doubtless is going to drive a lot of the decision-making, going forward, with the existing technologies that we've open-sourced." Green also said he wasn't averse to changing Solaris' license and that outsiders responded warmly to Sun's decision to use GPL for Java. "I think today's event and the feedback we received today really cast a very, very positive light on our choices going forward," he said.
