VMWare Looking At Novell's SuSE

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on September 17, 2010 at 9:20:31 AM
VMWare is eying Novell's software division and with that comes the SuSE distribution. If VMWare does gobble it up, this would mean that it can have a total Linux solution for their platform without having additional pay layers (like Windows for some of their products). They can also use their own Linux platform for bare metal support instead of what they are doing now (which is Linux-like).

Novell really screwed up with its software products. They had the ability to really dominate many areas with Netware, but lack of effort made them waste away into nothing. Novell will probably continue to waste away after the sale and burn through the cash.

Novel wins SCO Unix case (that started 7 years ago)

Yes, that's right - for all of you that were holding your breath to see the outcome, you realized you couldn't. If you somehow did manage to hold your breath for the past 7 years, you might want to call the Guinness Book or World Records or something.

Quote

After years of litigation, the District Court of Utah late yesterday ruled that Novell, not the SCO Group, owns the copyrights to the Unix operating system.
...
The long-running case began in 2003 when the company sued IBM, claiming that Linux is an unauthorized subset of Unix, and that SCO had true ownership of Unix and UnixWare Technology after Novell’s sale of part of its Unix business to SCO’s predecessor, the Santa Cruz Organization, in 1995. Novell joined the case after the IBM suit, claiming it did not sell the intellectual property rights to the Santa Cruz Organization. Novell began registering copyrights to Unix after that, and SCO sued Novell in 2004.

Wal-Mart Likes Microsoft And Novell

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on January 23, 2007 at 1:59:31 PM
It seems the partnership between Novell and Microsoft is doing well. Wal-Mart will start using resources from both companies. The article also cites IP liability as a solution from the partnership... BS.

Quote

With the partnership, Microsoft is seeking to make Novell its preferred Linux provider and to have both companies' products work well together. Microsoft offers coupons for Suse Enterprise Linux support services as well as legal indemnification for customers who use both Microsoft and Novell's Linux, which is open-source. Wal-Mart, a global retailing giant with $315 billion in annual revenue, is already a Microsoft customer, and Stewart said the multiyear relationship has been "outstanding." She said the intellectual property protections in the Novell deal give Wal-Mart more confidence in using Linux more broadly.

Novell: We Don't Support What Microsoft Says

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 21, 2006 at 2:55:40 PM
Even though we have partnered with them. Novell is trying to save some face with the recent attacks on Linux by Ballmer of Microsoft.

Quote

Since our announcement, some parties have spoken about this patent agreement in a damaging way, and with a perspective that we do not share. We strongly challenge those statements here. We disagree with the recent statements made by Microsoft on the topic of Linux and patents. Importantly, our agreement with Microsoft is in no way an acknowledgment that Linux infringes upon any Microsoft intellectual property. When we entered the patent cooperation agreement with Microsoft, Novell did not agree or admit that Linux or any other Novell offering violates Microsoft patents.

Novell Moves Off ReiserFS

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 15, 2006 at 5:06:04 PM
Novell will be switching to ext3 for its filesystem of choice in the SuSE EL product. Word is that the murder charges of the author of the Reiser filesystem had nothing to do with the decision.

Quote

ReiserFS has been under the control of Hans Reiser, a programmer who this week was arrested on suspicion of murdering his estranged wife. Novell had been considering its decision well before that event, however. "In response to customer demand, in the next version Novell will be changing the default file system in new installations from ReiserFS 3 to ext3," Novell said in a statement. "Novell will continue to support and improve ReiserFS version 3."
