Heating Water By Solar Radiation

Finally some good news that deals with energy. The US needs to support these clean and cheap efforts to conserve energy by using energy already coming to us. The sun is a big nuclear reactor.

Interest, nonetheless, is beginning to percolate, said Alex Winch, president of Mondial Energy. Mondial installs solar thermal systems in large buildings and then makes its money by reselling the heat generated by them back to the building owner. The Toronto-based company has put systems in 100-unit senior living centers in Canada, and it recently signed letters of intent for installations in a couple of U.S. hotels. Solar thermal systems can offset gas consumption even in places not known for sunshine, Winch noted. His first project was the Beach Solar Laundromat in Toronto. It's snowy in that city right now, but the system at Beach Solar has generated 382 kilowatts in the past week, according to its online energy meter.

EPA MPG Ratings Change In 2008

The EPA is changing the way MPG is done with their rating system in 2008. They are also requiring medium-duty trucks to have ratings posted as well.

The new system will use more high-speed driving, partly in 20-degree cold. Air conditioning will be on some portion of each driving cycle, and there will be more stop-and-go and rapid-acceleration driving. The mileage for gas-electric hybrids probably will be 20% to 30% lower than present estimates for city driving and 10% to 20% lower on the highway. These vehicles quickly lose their all-electric advantage when operated in cold weather or quickly accelerated, Wehrum said.

Radioactive Snails

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 12, 2006 at 1:29:49 PM
There are some radioactive snails coming out of the ground in Spain. We "lost" a few hydrogen bombs in that area. I guess we know they are still there.

Quote

The hydrogen bombs fell near the fishing village of Palomares in 1966 after a mid-air collision between a bomber and a refuelling craft, in which seven of 11 crewmen died. Hundreds of tons of soil were removed from the Palomares area and shipped to the United States after high explosive igniters on two bombs detonated on impact, spreading plutonium dust-bearing clouds across nearby fields.
