Contour Unimouse Wireless Ergonomic Mouse
In almost every input device review that we do, we mention that it is very important to make sure what you purchase feels good. Input device reviews are subjective because everyone's hands are different and just because a mouse feels good in one person's hands doesn't mean the next will feel the same. Enter Contour and the Unimouse. This is a highly customizable mouse that promises to make itself conform to your needs.Next Page »

TP-Link Smart Home Suite
More smart home products are coming out from different companies. While Zwave and ZigBee set the standard for hub based smart home products, the consumer level products that use WiFi directly are easy to setup and use, albeit with a few negatives like the ability to control everything from a unified interface across companies. Still, if you stick with a single company, the experience is nearly the same and TP-Link offers a few smart home products that are on the bench today.Next Page »

Technology keeps moving forward. It wasn't too long ago that we reviewed the 2630L and here we have a follow up model to that, the 2530L. While it lacks two way audio, everything else is basically the same. It is also half the size and draws less power. Is it a worthy follow up? Let's find out.Next Page »

Cell Phone Use Excites Brain: Results Inconclusive

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on February 23, 2011 at 11:08:50 AM
In a surprise result, it seems that the non-ionizing radiation put out by cell phones actually does cause the brain to become excited. Duh. Radio waves will warm surrounding tissue. That's what they do. Is it harmful? Probably not, maybe in large quantity.

Quote

Cell phones were placed next to the left and right ears of the volunteers. Scans of the brain were taken with only the right cell phone turned on and with the sound muted for 50 minutes. Brain scans were taken again with both phones turned off.

The results showed that glucose metabolism increased in the area of the brain near the antenna of the phone that was turned on, but not near the one that was turned off. However, the researchers determined that the results were of "unknown clinical significance," meaning they couldn't tell whether the increased brain activity actually entails any health risks.

Basically, a cell phone is making your brain do SOMETHING. Also, it means you're burning more calories by using a cellphone. Win win?

Wireless Companies Want Less Regulation

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on February 15, 2011 at 11:07:17 AM
And the world keeps moving. I'm pretty sure that most people and companies want less regulation to get in the way. Sure, I think the FCC has overstepped its bounds. I thought the FCC was supposed to worry about frequency use? Why are they dabbling into content censorship and such?

Quote

Meanwhile, in Europe, Vodafone's Colao said that he feels comfortable with how European regulators have handled the issue.

"The way that regulators have dealt with the Net neutrality issue in Europe is healthy," he said. "It recognizes the competitive environment. And I think it's something that U.S. regulators can learn from."

But he said that issues dealing with inter-carrier compensation, or the way operators compensate one other for accessing networks, need to be revisited. Specifically, the government tariffs that are charged to access networks between countries are too high, which leads to higher prices for wireless consumers.

I have no idea how the European phone systems work in terms of payments and fees, but the article mentions that growth of text messaging and interoperability. Since that time when texting was cheap/free, we've gone up to 20 cents per message for something that is basically free for the carrier. I'm not saying government regulation is the answer, but I thought price fixing was illegal? Where you see competition work is with the iPhone right now. VZW and AT&T are battling on prices and plans. This is the way it should work.

World's Smallest Laser

Poster: computer_freak_8
Posted on March 25, 2010 at 3:00:12 PM
Scientists have managed to transform a radically different laser concept into a radically different laser reality.

Quote

It’s 30 micrometers long - that’s 30 millionths of a meter - eight micrometers high and has a wavelength of 200 micrometers. This makes the laser considerably smaller than the wavelength of the light it emits - a scientific first.

Is seems to be based on the same general principles that allow cell phones (and other portable wireless communication devices) to use an antenna that is shorter than one-quarter of a wavelength of the frequency it operates at.

Where is wireless USB right now? No, it isn't the prime time technology it really should be. The original standard promised that wireless USB would be the THE protocol for many other technologies. It isn't there, yet. It might not ever be as good as promise or even implemented into products. Regardless, there are companies providing support for the fledgling standard to get on the ground floor when it finally takes off. Cables To Go provides a great kit to intro wireless USB.Next Page »

Switching Carriers For iPhone

If anyone is waiting on a huge line for this iPhone, you are stupid. Wait till the device is cheaper.

Quote

"I do have trepidation about switching from Verizon to AT&T, but I figure Steve Jobs wouldn't have made the deal if he couldn't back it up," she said. "Verizon has one of the largest networks, but AT&T has the iPhone." The 36-year-old, who owns a graphic design business with her husband, said she needs the iPhone for e-mailing, Web access, and sending and receiving files--all functions she could easily do with another device like a Treo or BlackBerry, which are already sold through Verizon Wireless. But as a Mac user for more than a decade, she admits she is drawn to anything created by Apple and Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Long Range WiFi

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 27, 2007 at 1:05:46 PM
Intel has demonstrated long range Wifi for use in third-world countries... With WiMAX still treading water, why can't everyone use this?

Quote

In a sense, these long-range Wi-Fi antennas would perform the same function as WiMax, a long-range wireless technology that many, including Intel, are experimenting with now. The difference is that a WiMax tower costs about $15,000 to $20,000. The long range Wi-Fi towers might only cost $700 to $800. Additionally, long range Wi-Fi could spread faster, Brewer said. The radio spectrum employed by WiMax is regulated by local telecommunications authorities. Putting up towers or offering services can require getting governmental permission.

Wireless Power Comes Again

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 15, 2006 at 4:12:03 PM
I guess it's that time again. MIT physicists say that wireless power is a reality. Let me know if you don't get any lawsuits about the transmission causing cancer.

Quote

Typically, systems that use electromagnetic radiation, such as radio antennas, are not suitable for the efficient transfer of energy because they scatter energy in all directions, wasting large amounts of it into free space. To overcome this problem, the team investigated a special class of "non-radiative" objects with so-called "long-lived resonances". When energy is applied to these objects it remains bound to them, rather than escaping to space. "Tails" of energy, which can be many metres long, flicker over the surface.
