WebKit And KHTML Together Again

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on July 24, 2007 at 5:54:04 PM
As the tide turns, KHTML and WebKit are coming together again. KHTML will be merge into WebKit, not the other way around...

Quote

Now, KHTML won't be deleted right away since there are features in it that need to be ported into Webkit. For example, KHTML (in KDE 4) implements portions of the definition of the CSS3 standard, which will need to be adopted into Webkit and so forth. But the big deal is that the coders that invented the underlying layers that power Konqueror, some Nokia browsers, Abrowse, Safari, Adobe's Air, and now Epiphany and a few other projects that are in the works, are now back in the fold. Additionally, Trolltech has announced that they are including Webkit in their upcoming Qt 4.4 release which means that a major, cross-platform toolkit now permits anyone to use the Webkit rendering engine where ever they need to render some HTML. In open source terms, this may be as big of a deal as the gcc and egcs merger of yonder days. KHTML and Webkit are definitely coming of age. The KDE developers, responsible for the original creation of KHTML, are dedicated to seeing this unforking happen and are taking a leading role in that effort.

ICC Profiles: Bane Of The Web

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 19, 2007 at 1:59:33 PM
I don't care what people say about ICC profiles. I hate them. They may be fine for photos and such but when ICC profiles are being used for images in layouts, they are horrible. I had tons of trouble with the .MacX theme in Safari.

Quote

Unlike the prevailing browsers on the Internet--Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox--the Apple browser supports different ways of encoding images that can mean richer, deeper colors. With the beta version of Safari now on Windows, Mac OS X users aren't the only ones who'll be able to see the difference. However, Apple won't keep that edge for long. Mozilla's forthcoming Firefox 3 browser, due to ship in beta form this July, likely will include support for richer color, said Vlad Vukicevic, a technical leader at Mozilla and a photo enthusiast. Together, the moves could help boost the Internet beyond the orbit of the sRGB color scheme, a broadly supported but limited standard initially introduced by Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft. But it's not likely that Web photography will achieve sRGB escape velocity until the dominant Internet Explorer also follows suit.

Mozilla Releases Firefox Updates

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 21, 2007 at 1:12:57 PM
Make sure to update your browser and email client if you run Mozilla. Set Firefox to autoupdate and it should be good. Mine updated yesterday. As a reminder, if you are running anything pre-2.0 (such as 1.5 or 1.0.7) you should upgrade now.

Quote

Mozilla on Monday released security updates for Firefox 2 and Firefox 1.5. Security updates for Firefox 1.5 will be available only until April 24, 2007, when Mozilla will stop supporting the earlier version. Mozilla is encouraging current 1.5 users to upgrade to 2.0 soon. Current users of Firefox 2.0 and 1.5 will receive an automatic update notification and will need to reload the browser for the changes to take effect. Changes in this update patch a flaw in the FTP protocol used by Firefox.

IE7 Passes 100 Million Downloads, Firefox Usage Improves

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on January 17, 2007 at 2:12:07 PM
While IE7 is forced on everyone running Windows XP and 2003, Firefox continues to gain marketshare. There are just too many bugs even in IE7 that need fixing.

Quote

According to Net Applications, Internet Explorer accounted for 79.6% of all browsers used in December 2006, a drop from the 80.6% during the previous month. Firefox's use, meanwhile, measured 14% in December, up from 13.5% in November. Also gaining ground in the last month of 2006 was Apple's Safari, which climbed to 4.2% from 4%, and Opera, which saw its share increase from 0.7% to 0.9%. Net Applications' data put IE 7's market share during December at 18.3%, up dramatically from November's 8.8%. But IE 6 lost more than IE 7 gained, dropping from 70.9% in November to 60.7% the next month. The gain in IE 7 is largely due to Microsoft pushing the new browser to end users via Windows' Automatic Updates setting, which is usually reserved for downloading and installing security fixes on PCs. Microsoft began issuing IE 7 to Windows XP users through Automatic Updates in early November as part of a controversial scheme to get the new browser in as many hands as possible as quickly as possible.

DoS Bug Found In Firefox 2

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 1, 2006 at 10:22:41 PM
Another security flaw has been found in Firefox 2. Even though there may be bugs, Mozilla should be quick to patch the browser. Unlike waiting till "patch Tuesday" like some other company...

Quote

The vulnerability lies in the way the open-source browser handles JavaScript code. Viewing a rigged Web page will cause the browser to exit, a representative for Mozilla, the publisher of the software, said Wednesday. Contrary to claims on security mailing lists, the bug cannot be exploited to run arbitrary code on a PC running Firefox 2, the representative said. This flaw in the JavaScript Range object is different from the denial-of-service vulnerability in Firefox 2 that was confirmed by Mozilla last week. That bug is related to a more serious security hole, which was fixed in earlier versions of Firefox, the organization has said.

Another IE7 Flaw

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 30, 2006 at 6:38:02 PM
Here is another IE7 flaw that enables a phishing attack. The error stems from a trusted source. Not to trusted, is it?

Quote

The browser flaw could affect users who visit a trusted site by opening a pop-up window in that site but containing malicious code. This is the second IE 7 flaw that has been discovered since Microsoft released the browser two weeks ago. Last week, a security flaw was discovered in IE 7 that could spoof the address of a pop-up window. The two IE 7 flaws, if used in conjunction with each other, can easily dupe all but the most security-minded users, said Thomas Kristensen, chief technology officer of security company Secunia, which discovered the flaws.

IE7 Released

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 19, 2006 at 12:25:00 PM
Microsoft has released IE7. You can grab your copy of it here. I recommend trying it on a test machine first... just in case.

Quote

Hello, my name is Kellie, I am a Lead Program Manager on the IE Team. First and foremost, the IE team would like to thank everyone in the community who contributed feedback to the IE7 release. You guys rock! This release was the first time we used the Microsoft Connect site to collect feedback for the public beta. We learned a lot of lessons from this feedback program, and we intend to make it better next time around. We received an overwhelming response from you and your efforts provided great ideas and drove important bug fixes. IE7 is now live, but this is not the end… The IE team is looking forward to the next version, and we are dedicated to listening to your ideas in the next beta release. We appreciate your support!

Firefox 2 RC3 Released

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 17, 2006 at 1:42:39 PM
Remember that RC releases are not final products. Is anyone else not impressed by where Firefox is heading? I want a fast, light browser. If I want to bloat it up, I put in extensions.

Quote

Firefox 2's theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability without altering the familiarity of the browsing experience. For instance, toolbar buttons now glow when you hover over them. We will continue to improve the look and feel throughout the release candidate process.

Firefox 2 RC2 Released

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 7, 2006 at 2:09:53 PM
Hot on the heels of the Vista RC2 is the new Firefox RC2 release. These RC releases are candidate releases that may not be stable and shouldn't be used if you are worried about crashing.

Quote

Firefox 2 Release Candidate 2 (RC 2), the latest preview release of the next version of the Firefox browser, is now available for download. Web application developers, our testing community, and users who want to get a sneak peek at the next version of Firefox should download and install this release candidate. Please note that at this time, users should not expect all of their extensions, plugins and themes from previous versions of Firefox to work properly.

10 Million Downloads of Firefox

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on December 12, 2004 at 8:24:50 PM
That's right, there have been over 10 million downloads of Firefox since the 1.0 release. I recommend Firefox to all.

Quote

If you remember, it took us 10 days to reach 2 million downloads of the Firefox Preview Release. This time, in only 32 days, we quintupled that number (anyone want to give the Guinness book folks a call?)!

Netscape Swings Both Ways

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 30, 2004 at 5:42:29 PM
Netscape will be using Gecko, the same engine that Firefox is built on... AND it will use IE. The program will allow users to switch to each engine. Sounds dangerous to me for the common user.

Quote

With Tuesday's release, Netscape is betting that ensuring site compatibility through the IE option, providing general surfing security with the default Gecko engine, and offering an easier interface for some of Firefox's more advanced features will make the browser an attractive option for mainstream Web surfers.

Firefox Cuts into IE Marketshare

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 23, 2004 at 4:14:22 PM
For the first time ever, IE has dropped below 90% marketshare. There have been over 5 million downloads of Firefox.

Quote

"We're seeing a much swifter uptake for 1.0 than for the preview release, which took more than a month to reach 5 million downloads," Asa Dotzler, Mozilla's release manager, said in a statement. "We're clearly reaching a new world of users and we're doing it at a faster pace than any time in Mozilla's history."

AOL to Release New Netscape

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on November 18, 2004 at 4:53:34 PM
With the success of the newest release of Firefox, AOL wants to get Netscape back into the fight. Basing on the new Mozilla code, the browser should be very competitive.

Quote

"We are excited that, on Nov. 30, we will unveil many new features that will empower your Internet experience," reads a note on the Netscape portal signed by the Netscape browser team. "While other browsers have seen little improvement over recent years--except frequent patches for security leaks--we have consistently added new features to save you time and to make the most out of your time online. As a part of our next evolutionary step, we have developed this new browser prototype, which could change the way the world masters the Web."
