Linux is one of elusive topics in many discussions relating to computers. Cut through the fog and try a real operating system with Ubuntu. Take the ease of Mac OSX and the stability of Linux and you have Ubuntu. Read on...

I love Ubuntu.

Everyone should at least try it.

I'm running it on a Celeron 2 600. A P3 should handle it fine.

How much RAM does your system have?

I think you do these distro articles to see if I still pop in.
I've run Ubuntu (Warty) on a Celeron 500-something with 256 RAM and an Intel i810 AGP, and it ran fine for the most part; though I eventually migrated the packages over to Debian Sid. Once Hub got me to go from Testing to Unstable, I've just been in love with the system.

Now, some mild notes to complain about. The use of the term "fragmented" to describe Linux is suggestive of Unix fragmentation, which is technically inaccurate; well, massively inaccurate. While linear binary loading is virtually impossible from Linux distribution to Linux distribution, or even in the same distribution over time, the traditional ABI calls work just fine in Linux, usually not having to worry under contemporary circumstance whether the necessary libraries are correct, where, in old Unix land, ABI's even varied from place to place, requiring much work just to cover Solaris, HP-UX and AIX, the three primary business systems (IRIX, while usable for the same business, has entered the niche world high-end processing, in large part due to the hardware platform they've developed on).

Second, the recommendation to just dump Windows in favour Ubuntu or Linux in general edges on irresponsibility and bias. My general experience in getting people to switch over is that either CrossOver Office/Cedega or Bochs/Windows will be required at some point. The reason is often predictable; they just want to use that one application, usually a card making application that came with their printer, or 101 Games on a CD or some annoying thing that work or their school requires them to use (sometimes, it really isn't a file format thing; MS has, near literally, brainwashed some otherwise intelligent people; I think it's related to this Trusted^TM crap).

Also, it sounds like Automatix doesn't Just Work^TM yet, and when you tell people, "All you have to do is copy and paste this into (a terminal|commandline) as root," their eyes get a nifty glassy look, at which point, you can say some really odd bits like, "and rebuild the alternator before checking your transmission fluid," and they take a good second or two before their brains say, "hey, that's something to do with cars!"

Furthermore you didn't cover how well the other applications can be used as drop in replacement, where they improve and where they fail. You didn't even mention evolution.

Now, here's a quick recommendation for future distribution reviews: stop doing it this way.

You should do independent articles on the many sets of commonly compared and referred to things that come up and update them as those things change. This way, you can save time by comparing individual distributions to the pre-existing articles and link to them. First might be a Linux general background article. One article for common install. Another one for hardware limitations. Another on acquiring, changing, removing or updating applications. Another comparing applications on a "drop in for" level that compares what default and whats popular on Windows and Mac. And the last I'd mention, but don't stop here, how Windows applications can be made to run Linux. Linux equivalents (see drop in article), Linux binary, WINE, CrossOver/Cedega and Bochs (or vm of choice). Otherwise, every time you try a distribution, you're just spending a lot of time doing the same thing over and over.

Once you've done that, your articles will just be the specific variations from those articles, ultimately referencing them after describing what's different.

Finally, I noticed you've gotten a proper graphical output capturing tool of some type, because I don't see ASELabs trademark screen glare ;oP

I should've labelled it as more or less and installation article and first use. But I didn't...
