Introduction
In the past, notebook coolers have featured a few fans wrapped together in a block of plastic. While relatively effective on paper, not all designs were functional or ideal for all laptops. Today, Antec provides a solution that is aesthetic in appearance, yet simple and functional in design with the passively cooled Notebook Cooler Basic.

Marketing Summary
First Impressions
Upon our first glance, we had high regards for the solid construction and simple, yet effective design. The Basic utilizes perforated aluminum to let air pass through and dissipate heat. This also keeps the cooler lightweight and amazingly slim (being only .4” thick when closed) which allows it to slip into your existing laptop bag with no issues. Additionally, it features a flip-up stand. This raises the angle of the notebook to improve airflow. The 10-15 degree angle increase gives typing a slightly more natural feel which can help reduce wrist strain over an extended period of time.
Unlike most competitors in the notebook cooling market, the Notebook Cooler Basic uses no fans and relies on passive cooling. The benefits of passive cooling are appealing: lowering temperatures while adding zero noise to your setup. While it's well known knowledge that air-cooling would achieve better results than passive cooling, the market for passive cooling is on the rise.

Testing
So we set out to see what the Notebook Cooler Basic could achieve. Our test involved using Handbrake to convert a 4GB, 720p HD file to a suitable MP4 format for use on an iPod.
Conclusions
The Notebook Cooler Basic was able to lower temps several degrees across the board. Our idle temps dropped 4° C alone, which isn't too bad! Thanks to the aluminum construction, the Notebook Cooler Basic acts as a heatsink to dispel the heat, which seems to work fairly well.
The current street price is about $20 on Amazon, which is a fair price in our opinion. It is worthy of note you can get an air-cooled solution for just a little more cash, but if you're looking for a quiet, yet simple way to cut a few degrees, the Antec Notebook Cooler Basic is a great deal.
ASE Labs would like to thank Antec for making this review possible.
